boardindex.jpg

Complete documentation is found on the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) pages of the Help Desk. The Help Desk consists of the FAQ's and a ticket system.

The Help Desk FAQ is in 3 categories:

  • "CrewDiscuss Components" - For Administrators and details the Step by step instructions to customize your CrewDiscuss Message Board.
  • "CrewDiscuss Tips" - For Users and details how users can configure in their User Profile how the CrewDiscuss Message Board is presented to them.
  • "CrewDiscuss Tools to Create Web Sites" - For anyone that wants to know the tools used to develop web sites.

The Help Desk FAQ, can be viewed by anyone and is indexed by search engines.

The Ticket system can only be used by the administrator and the tickets are not indexed.

What is a Help Desk Ticket you may ask. Click the link to find out.

NOTE: If a CrewDiscuss Messaging Board administrator needs any assistance what so ever to set up their board after purchase please submit a ticket. All assistance to Venturing Crews is free of charge.

To submit a ticket merely login to the Help Desk using your CrewDiscuss admin login credentials and describe the issue you are having. We at CrewDiscuss will respond ASAP.

We can use a TeamViewer remote desktop connection to your CrewDiscuss administrator's PC to provide direct hands on support when needed. You will find that TeamViewer will aid in cross training CrewDiscuss administrators. It is free for non-commercial use and free to you to allow our connection to your PC.

Once you purchase CrewDiscuss then follow the instructions at "CrewDiscuss Getting Started" FAQ to place it online for use by the Crew.

2.  Design References

Each of the major components of the Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss Messaging Boards are described below:

  • phpBB - Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss templates are based on phpBB. phpBB features can be found here.  User documentation can be found here.  Developer wiki can be found here.  PHPBB is THE #1 FREE, OPEN SOURCE BULLETIN BOARD SOFTWARE.

NOTE:  Once you purchase Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss and it is active on the server it will not appear in the search engines until you add "Bots" to the permissions for the public accessible forums. See ACP->Forums->Forum Permissions.  Also, you will need to submit the URL to the search engines for indexing.

    The following categories are public:
    "HELP FINANCE TROOP/CREW"
    "WELCOME TO SCOUTING BSA"
    "ABOUT OUR BSA TROOP/ CREW"
    "BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA INFORMATION"
  • Support Ticket and F.A.Q - To support your use of Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss we have implemented a Help Desk System from Maian Script World.  The F.A.Q. section details the set up and administration of your Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss Message Board.
  • phpEventCalendar - This is the calendar integrated with Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss.  User documentation can be found here.  PHP Event Calendar Lite edition is FREE!  They offer other editions with additional features for a fee.
  • Cash Book - The Cash book is based on Beginner Bookkeeping which was modified to add individual Troop/Crew member funding and chart of account suited to a Troop/Crew.  The cash book is an excel spread sheet. Here are some Excel tutorialsMicrosoft online excel is used to embed the cash book on Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss. This Excel Cash Book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License.
  • Store - Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss provides a store in which the Troop/Crew can sale products to raise revenue to fund projects and activities.  Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss provides an example of my Free Ecwid store. If your Troop/Crew intends to sale numerous products in numerous categories you should consider one of the paid plans. A PayPal account for your Troop/Crew is required.
  • Donations - You can accept donations to your Troop/Crew. Donations are implemented using the Ecwid store.  A PayPal account for your Troop/Crew is required. As an alternative you could just implement a PayPal "Donate" button.
  • PayPal - The Ecwid store supports PayPal as the standard payment portal. You will need to setup a business account to accept payments from the customers for products and donations.   If you desire you can purchase a Point of Sale card reader like PayPal's chip reader and collect monies at you fund raising and recruitment events  where ever you have a cellphone internet connection( the PayPal chip reader uses Bluetooth to pair with your cellphone which executes the Ecwid Application. You will need to purchase the Ecwid Venture service to obtain this feature.
  • Advertising - phpBB supports advertisements using VigLink. Go to the ACP to enable viglink. You can choose alternate Affiliate Programs for Monetizing your Troop/Crew.  Additional information on How to Get Paid for Advertising on Your Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss board can be found here. Another option is crowd funding.

You must replace the Cash Book, Ecwid Store, PayPal, and Viglink accounts with your own. The details of embedding these accounts can be found in the FAQ section of the Help Desk.

The absolute first thing you, the administrator of the CrewDiscuss, must do before first time use, is to set your username and password and other profile info into the calendar. Since you are reading this then you are logged into CrewDiscuss.

CrewDiscuss support three different methods to accept donations on line.  1. using the PayPal Donation Extension  2. Using a Paypal Donate button on the "Our Store" page.  3. Ecwid store on the "Our Store"  page .

9.  BBcodes

Forum description and Post text use what are called BBcodes to decorate the text. The editor is NOT WYSIWUG. The Support ticket system also uses BBcodes in its editor. For the CrewDiscuss administrators this is rather awkward and time consuming when crafting a lengthy post so we propose a simpler process

  • We suggest crafting the text in a WYSIWUG editor based on an online WysiBB. This online WysiBB editor outputs BB source code.
  • Once you have finalized your text click "[BBCODE]" in the WYsiBB  Editor which shows the BB code generated

    wysibb_demo-bbcode.jpg

  • Paste the text, now with embedded BBcodes, into the Forum descriptions or Posts.

    bbcode-post.jpg

  • Now preview and Voila,

10.  Moderating

A forum moderator oversees the communication activity of an Internet forum.

  • He/she monitors the interchange of contributors and makes decisions regarding content and the direction of topics. Moving discussions from one section to another to keep topics organized is also a common job for a forum moderator.

  • Private forums linked to a website or group often operate a bit differently. The forum moderator is likely to be familiar with the members, and may be more lax in enforcing rules if he is aware of bantering members and their tones. Standards differ greatly in forums, and newcomers are advised to post with caution until they get the general feel of the forum's atmosphere.

  • CrewDiscuss provide many tools to moderate the forums.

If you have a very active board you may wish for volunteers to moderate at selected times. We hope your board is very active because it has been designed so that less time is spent in face to face meetings administrating the crew and more time working together on projects and activities.

13.  Language Administration

Scouting is happening all around the world – there are National Scout Organizations representing their home countries and delivering the promise of Scouting in virtually all areas and regions globally.

The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) is a confederation of 170 national Scout organizations. WOSM was formed to encourage the Scouting movement throughout the world by promoting unity and understanding of its purpose and principles and by supporting its expansion and development.

CrewDiscuss Messaging Board is multilingual!  You set the default language for the board at ACP->GENERAL->Board settings->Default Language and individual users can select their country flag in theri UCP->Profile->Edit Profile.

The CrewDiscuss has the following languages installed for the board and for most extensions of the board: Google Translator for Firefox and

  • US English
  • British English
  • German
  • Spanish
  • French
  • Polish
  • Hungarian
  • Portuguese
  • Turkish
  • Dutch
  • Czechoslovakia

The language packs only affect standard language in phpBB, such as labels, explanations, buttons, and extensions. They do not translate text entered in posts. The CrewDiscuss Template forum and topic text is in english. The admin needs to translate these to the boards preferred language. Suggested Firefox addons include:  Google Translator for Firefox and Google™ Translator.

If there is a particular language that you want, submit a ticket, and We will test it on a Demo board and install it on your live CrewDiscuss board when you so instruct.

14.  Pages

The CrewDiscuss message board has the following custom pages:

  • Our Store - HTML and java script custom page
  • Weather - Redirect
  • Calander - Redirect
  • Cash Book - Redirect
  • Contact - Redirect
  • Admin Tools - Email Editor and Calendar setup and Board Watch

These pages are implemented using the "Pages" extension.

The page links appear in the Nav Bar before the links button.

Our Store contains the Donate button, Ecwid store and advertising scripts.

A redirect merely opens a URL location using the java script:

<script>
window.onload = function() {
// similar behavior as an HTTP redirect
    window.location.replace("https://template.zcrewdiscuss.us/memberlist.php?mode=contactadmin");
}
</script>

15.  Extensions

Extensions are downloadable packages which can be installed on a phpBB board to add new features and functionality. With extensions, you no longer have to modify a single line of code in phpBB. Extensions are simply uploaded to your board ( but we must do it for you)  and enabled inside the ACP. Updating, disabling and removing extensions is equally as easy to perform.

  • Pages -An official phpBB Extension, Pages allows you to create custom static pages for your phpBB forum, such as an About Us page, News page, or even a simple forum Blog. • PushSafer - push notification to admin on registration. You are required to register and enter the provided PushSafer key.

  • Email List - Adds an Admin option to display a list of member's email addresses.   ACP->USERS AND GROUPS->Email list

VigLink's analytics dashboard tells you which outbound links are clicked most, which are making you the most money, and more.

  • PayPal Donation - This is an alternative to the PayPal button that you can insert on the "OUR STORE" page. This extension must be enabled to use it.

To setup the PayPal Donation Extension  got to ACP->EXTENSIONS->PAYPAL DONATIONS. The extension has been configured using my PayPal Account which you need to change in 'general settings. paypalpermissions.jpg

  • Contact Admin - A phpBB extension that allows guests and/or registered users to either send an email/send a PM to admins or make a Post in a designated forum. It also overrides the default contact admin link found on the forum. We chose this Contact form over the standard form as it has important features including a spambot countermeasure.

Enable ACP->EXTENSION->Contact Board Administration and disable ACP-.GENERAL->Contact page settings

Note: When the Contact page is submitted it is posted as user: contactbot to "Someones Knocking on the Door" forum in the Notifications category which is seen only be administrators.

NOTE:  if logged in the standard  contact form is seen.  This extension's Contact Form is only active if not logged in.

NOTE:  if board disabled then registrations are not accepted.  This extension's Contact Form is available.

Your CrewDiscuss board must be protected against spammers and hackers. By virtue of the fact that Crewdiscuss has a rather complicated registration form requiring numerous questions to be answered with a specific character set, then the automated spamming software will be very frustrated.

As you might have noticed many websites have enhanced the login and registration procedures, well CrewDiscuss and phpBB has done likewise. The following features should be noted:

  • Registration Form - You set the registration form fields in the ACP->users and Groups->Custom Profile Fields.

custom_profile_fields.jpg

  • Spambot Counter measures - I have chosen a Question and answer countermeasure in ACP->GENERAL->Spambot countermeasures.

    spambot.jpg

I have configured it with a few questions that anyone can answer after they read the public portion of the CrewDiscuss board.

    questions.jpg

What is the best CAPTCHA to prevent Spam

    Key CPATCHA

  • User Registration Settings -

    user_registration.jpg

  • Password strength - Passwords are the weakest link in preventing SPAM. This extension will show users how strong (or weak) their password is as they type it into the password field when creating or updating their account.

There is a link on the registration page to use  password generator at https://passwordsgenerator.net/  to obtain a STRONG password rating.

  • User Access Notification - This extension sends notifications about successful and failed logins enabling the board administrator to take remedial actions before damage proceeds very far.  The extension is handy. SiteGuard, the author of the extension has other for fee services that may be advantageous.

    siteguard.jpg

  • Stop Forum Span - Extension will query the stop forum spam database on registration and posting (for guests only) and deny the post and or registration to go through if found.

DO NOT UPGRADE THE PHPBB  VERSION.  If it is not broken, don't fix it.

WE DO NOT RECOMMEND ADDING EXTENSION TO YOUR LIVE CREWDISCUSS PHPBB. Some of them do not work.

If there is a particular extension that you want, submit a ticket, and We will test it on a Demo board and install it on your live CrewDiscuss board when you so instruct.

17.  Domain Name

The URL of your Crew Discuss Home page is of the form https://xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.zcrewdiscuss.us
The URL of your Crew Discuss Forum Index page is of the form https://xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.zcrewdiscuss.us/index.php
The Domain Name of your Crew Discuss web site is of the form xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.zcrewdiscuss.us
The xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx portion is the subdomain while the zcrewdiscuss.us portion is the top level domain.

We can change your Domain Name to any thing you wish.
For example your Domain Name could be crew4370.zcrewdiscuss.us or just crew4370.us
If you want to change just the subdomain submit a ticket and we will make the change at no cost to you.
If you want to change the top level Domain Name you will have to purchase you domain from a Domain Name Registrar.

namecheap.com has some good pricing for .us domains. Also, domain.com is reasonably priced.

Once you have purchased your domain, you must point the DNS zone records of your domain to our server at IP 209.182.234.252 and advise us about the top level domain by submitting a ticket. Include in the ticket your account username and password of the registrar because setting up a top level domain is rather complicated and I will have to check your work (or do that work for you) and do some more set up.

I will have to do some work on our server's DNS and it may take 1 to 2 days for all the DNS changes to synchronize throughout the internet.  See DNS zone explained.

We will provide status reports on the top level domain change ticket and for your education, a description of what was done will be provided.

18.  Web Site Customizing Tools

While you don't need any extra tools or programs to run Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss as it's ready to go out of the box.  Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss have been setup for a fictional Troop/Crew in Southeast Missouri and has examples of Cash Book, Calendar, and store components.

What I mean by customize is editing  the various forums and topics that relate to your Troop's/Crew's country, BSA Council and district,  Troop/Crew By laws,  ongoing projects and activities, place holder topics,  and setting up the components

Customization then may involve, but not likely, such things as adding Images that may need editing, adding HTML/java script using the pages extension, converting HTML to BBcodes, to prepare lengthy posts off-line prior to posting.

All of the programs I mention are either open source (read: free) or freeware or free but licensed service. However, there may be paid programs or other programs not on this list you'd like to use. That's fine -- this is just a list to get you started.

Text editor programs

A good plain text editor is essential for installing Extensions and making tweaks to your board. An editor for phpBB should have at least two features

  1. able to respect the correct end of line (EOL) convention. phpBB uses the UNIX (LF) line ending format.
  2. able to encode files as UTF-8 without BOM (see phpBB3 and UTF-8 without BOM for more information)

We do not recommend Windows Notepad or Wordpad because they are unable to meet either of those requirements.

Installing Extensions or tweaking your board features are unavailable on your Troop Discuss and CrewDiscuss board.

Editors are largely a matter of personal preference as most have similar features like syntax coloring, line numbers (very useful for tracking down errors!), etc. Important note: Do not use a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor like FrontPage or Dreamweaver with phpBB as those will likely add extraneous markup that will cause problems.

Graphics programs

You'll need a graphics program if you want to create or edit images for use with
Troop Discuss and CrewDiscuss. Typically, you should just link images from your favorite photo storage and sharing sites.

  • GIMP (cross platform including Windows) - “a versatile graphics manipulation package”.
  • Paint.NET (Windows) “a free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows”.
  • IrfanView (Windows)  One of the Most Popular Viewers Worldwide and it is free.
  • PhotoBucket  photoBucket provides a link to images that I would put between BBcode [img] tags and according to their documentation it delivers the image in the best compressed format.
  • Dropbox  -  Similar to Photobucket but most file types can be uploaded and linked to from  a phpBB post
  • postimage - This is the image sharing that I use in Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss product.  It constructs the BBcode and HTML for you to copy directly to a forum post and it is simple to use.

HTML to BBcode converters

A way of converting an HTML page from a non-copyrighted web site to BBcode for adding to a topic or reply. You can find more information at the
Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss Helpdesk.

HTML/java script Editor/Debuggers

Tools you can use if you want to get down to the nitty gritty of writing HTML and Java Script and create your own custom page using the pages extension.

w3schools is an excellent resource for web developing.  A keyword search on how to do something in HTML and Java Script will more than likely give you a link to stackoverflow.

19.  Tools Needed when Working with Remote Servers

These tools are not needed to operate Troop Discuss and Crew Discuss.  They are provided here in the case you wish to setup a fresh copy phpBB or concrete5 application using the Ten Mile High hosting service which features cpanel.  I have noted my tool recommendations. They are the tools I use because they are very simple to use and free.

Decompression programs

A decompression program will decompress the zip or bz2 phpBB package you downloaded.

We don't recommend using the utilities in host control panels for decompressing packages. It is better to decompress the package locally (on your computer) and then upload the decompressed package.

  • 7-Zip (Windows) - works well and will decompress many formats including gz (database backups)
  • jZip
  • Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Mac OS X include built in utilities for decompressing zip files (recommended)

FTP programs

You need a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program to upload phpBB files from your personal computer to the web server.

  • FileZilla Client (cross platform) - FileZilla is an excellent FTP program for Windows.
  • FireFTP (cross platform) - if you use Firefox this is a handy extension so you don't have to open another program
  • WinSCP (Windows) Award winning Remote File Manager and one that I personally use.  (recommended)
  • More FTP programs with comparisons

File comparison programs

Used to compare files or folders to each other and show any differences, for example, if you are unsure how your file has been changed you could compare your file to one from the standard package to find any differences.

  • WinMerge (Windows) Recommended
  • KDiff3 (cross platform)
  • ExamDiff is a freeware Windows tool to visually compare text files (recommended)

Database tools

Used to open databases to view and edit schema's records, and fields.

  • HeidiSQL (Windows)
  • phpMyAdmin is included in cPanel or you can download it to your PHP server (recommended)

Search

A way of searching a directory and sub-directories for all occurrences of particular text is also useful, particularly when troubleshooting or developing Extensions. For example, you may want to find all lines in all files in the software which contain the variable $script_path[/list]

20.  Quick links

You have read all the narratives I presume.  This is just a clean list of all the links.

You can import these into your browsers library of bookmarks.

Links marked with asterisk * are the programs I use all the time.
